Oryx (ὄρυξ) is an animal mentioned by Aristotle. According to his "History of Animals", there are a few single-horned and solid-hooved animals, like the Indian ass, but only the oryx is single-horned and cloven-hooved.

It is suspected that, rather than the leucoryx, the word refers to an antelope called nilgai, which lives in India.
