Vom Einhorn. Das Einhorn ist ein kleines Tier und gleicht einem Böckchen. Es ist sehr sanft und ruhig; jedoch weil es mitten auf dem Kopfe ein starkes Horn hat, das sehr hoch und emporgerichtet ist, so kämpft es mit diesem gegen die Tiere und fürchtet sich vor nichts. Wie aber wird es gefangen? Man schickt, heisst es, eine reine Jungfrau in die Nähe seines Weges, da wo es gewöhnt ist, Wasser zu trinken. Und wenn es die Jungfrau sieht, die mit einem schönen Gewande geschmückt ist, so geht es zu ihr; und sie setzt sich, das Einhorn aber springt und setzt sich in den Schoss der Jungfrau, wie wenn es saugen will. Hierzu hat es eine natürliche Neigung. Und die Jungfrau hebt es an ihre Brust und säugt es, und wie ein vom Wein oder Schlaf Berauschter wird es stille bei ihr und schläft. Dann kommen die Jäger, nähern sich ihm allmählich und fesseln es; und auf diese Weise, sagt man, wird jenes Tier gefangen.

There is an animal called dajja, extremely gentle, which the hunters are unable to capture because of its great strength. It has in the middle of its brow a single horn. But observe the ruse by which the huntsmen take it. They lead forth a young virgin, pure and chaste, to whom, when the animal sees her, he approaches, throwing himself upon her. Then the girl offers him her breasts, and the animal begins to suck the breasts of the maiden and to conduct himself familiarly with her. Then the girl, while sitting quietly, reaches forth her hand and grasps the horn on the animal's brow, and at this point the huntsmen come up and take the beast and go away with him to the king.—Likewise the Lord Christ has raised up for us a horn of salvation in the midst of Jerusalem, in the house of God, by the intercession of the Mother of God, a virgin pure, chaste, full of mercy, immaculate, inviolate.
